15 Chapter

“What the hell are you talking about?” Luka demands. “What crazy theories?”

Kye is furious about my accusation. “Sephone hasn’t mentioned any crazy theories to me.”

“Yeah, well, you weren’t in my quarters right before she had her kind of miscarriage,” I shoot back. “Let’s start with the fact that she knew she wasn’t pregnant. She somehow had pregnancy hormones or something like that injected into her so that she could lie during her interviews.”

Kye cocks his head to the side. “I didn’t take you for a conspiracy theorist,” he says dryly.

I have never wanted to punch him more. “She told me this herself.”

“Bullshit.”

Ignoring his vulgar retort, I continue. “She also knew who you were before you were captured. She was in on the whole thing.”

“If you had been with us during that time, you would know how impossible that is. No one would say the things that guy did to someone he knew and was working with,” Kye insists.

“Unless they were role playing,” I counter.

Around the corner of his eyes, I see doubt start to creep in. “You really expect me to believe this?”

Luka steps forward. “Amara, what, exactly, did Sephone say to you.”

I narrow my eyes in his direction. Is he doubting me, too? I thought he would be the one to believe me right away. Maybe Sephone was right in thinking he was a good mark. He seems to have more faith in her than me at the moment. “I just told you what she said.”

Luka rubs a hand over his short cropped hair. “She’s so timid.” Maybe he does believe me.

I rub the spot on my jaw that surprisingly hasn’t bruised considering how hard she hit me. “Yeah, well, she wasn’t so timid when she was kicking and punching me earlier.”

Kye’s eyes widen in surprise at this new accusation, and his voice is dripping with doubt as he says, “She never once fought back against our captor.”

I roll my eyes. “Because she was working with him.” Taking a deep, calming breath that doesn’t work at all, I add, “She is working with one of the resistances.”

Luka is instantly on guard. “Are there others coming?”

I shake my head. “I don’t think so. At least, not right now. Sephone said she came here to rescue her dad. She’s convinced he’s locked up in some sublevel of Sanctuary that we don’t know about.” My eyes find Kye again. “She was planning to come here the whole time you guys were supposedly captured. You were never going anywhere else.” Maybe he can get some small comfort in the fact that he wasn’t ever going to be sold to a fighting ring.

I’m getting to him, but he’s not there yet. “The entire refugee camp was raided,” Kye points out.

“It could have been staged.”

Kye begins to pace. “People were hurt. Why would a resistance faction hurt refugees?”

“They wanted you. I guess they were willing to do whatever it took.” I find comfort in the fact that they felt they had to trick Kye into coming here.
